Aided by a $480,000 cooperative agreement with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), ESMC will expand its ecosystem services markets protocol and pilot efforts to four additional regions beyond its first project in the Texas/Oklahoma Southern Great Plains area. The Ecosystem Services Market Consortium LLC (ESMC) is developing a science-based outcomes approach to soil and agricultural stewardship that will provide environmental credits to farmers and ranchers for land stewardship resulting in soil carbon sequestration, reduced greenhouse gases (GHG), improved water quality and conserved use of water.
ESMC members include private and public sector partners along with NGO’s who are creating a voluntary, market-based effort to provide ecosystem service payments to U.S. farmers and ranchers for their results in improving ecosystem services that provide widespread environmental benefits. This includes developing tools to measure conservation activity outcomes. Scheduled for launch in 2022, ESMC’s user-friendly marketplace will enable producers to receive payments from entities seeking measurable, quantifiable and scalable environmental credits to meet their sustainability goals. Addendum to News Release: Indigo Agriculture is no longer a member of ESMC as of October 2019.
